Türk edebiyatında Tanzimat’la birlikte, özellikle, tiyatro alanında kullanılan kavramlardan birisi olan adaptasyona bazı aydınlar, milli tiyatronun gelişmesi ve Türk toplum yapısı üzerinde olumsuz etkiler yapabileceği görüşü ile karşı çıkmışlar; bazıları ise modern tiyatronun gelişmesine katkıda bulunacağını düşünerek desteklemişlerdir. Yaygın kanaat adaptasyona karşı çıkma yönünde iken Ahmet Vefik Paşa’nın Moliere’den yapmış olduğu adapteler kabul görmüştür. Bu kabulde Ahmet Vefik Paşa’nın komedi türünü ve bu türün dünya edebiyatındaki en güçlü temsilcisi Moliere’i ve onun Türk toplum ve ahlak yapısına uygun oyunlarını, sağlam bir tiyatro tekniği ve sade bir dille adapte etmesinin etkisi büyüktür. Zoraki Tabib örneğinde bunu görmek mümkündür.
Adaptation, an item of theatre in Turkish literature beginning with Tanzimat, has been opposed since it would have negative effects on development of national theatre and on Turkish society structure. On the other hand adaptation was supported as it would benefit development of modern theatre. Though the common belief was against adaptation, adaptations of Ahmet Vefik Pasa from Moliere have found acceptance. This acceptance might be due to his preference of comedy and of its best performer in world literature, Moliere, and adaptation of plays consistent with Turkish society structure and moral virtues as in the case of Zoraki Tabip.
