Borders in the Context of Nationalism Theories

This study aims to understand the borders in the light of theoretical discussions. Since the basic theoretical orientation related to borders constitutes nationalism, the study focuses on borders through nationalism theories. The main problem of this study is how borders are applied while the theories about nationalism are being constructed, how much these theories contain borders, how the boundaries have a function and role in terms of these theories. In the study, primarily covers the definition of nationalism, its meanings, and its relation with borders. Then, the focus is on three main theoretical approaches (primordial approach, modernist approach and ethno-symbolist approach) related to nationalism and traces of boundaries are pursued in these theoretical approaches. As a result of the study, it was determined that the borders could not find enough space in the primordial theoretical approach. In terms of modernist theory, the borders symbolize the sovereignty fields of the nation-state and the starting and ending points of nationalism and national identity. In addition, since the boundaries form the border understanding of the modern period in a fixed, rigid and linear form, it has become the main focus of attention of modernist theory. In the modernist theoretical tradition, borders are seen to be among the central themes. In terms of ethno-symbolist theory, the boundaries are lines that symbolize the social conditions of the period and ethnic and cultural identity. Since symbols are social carriers of meaning, borders have symbolic functions in social life and organization. As with the modernist approach, it was understood that the ethno-symbolist approach puts boundaries at the center of its analysis. In this context, borders are among the important sociological dynamics that enable the organization of nationalism and the construction of national identity.
